Snowsill repeats in Mooloolaba (March 31, 2008 )
The bid for history was again derailed by three-time world champion Emma Snowsill who today won the BG Triathlon World Cup season opener in Mooloolaba. In the first head-to-head battle between Snowsill and rival Vanessa Fernandes, it was the home favorite who triumphed. Fernandes settled for silver, approximately 39 seconds behind. Last year's under23 world champion Lisa Norden of Sweden had an incredible run to take the bronze, becoming the first Swede to ever podium at a world cup in ITU history.
American Laura Bennett finished fourth while Brit Andrea Whitcombe rounded out the top five.In a riveting battle between Kiwis Andrea Hewitt and Nicky Samuels for the third and final New Zealand Olympic spot, Hewitt came out on top. She was the top Kiwi across the line in 14th spot and more importantly, securing her ticket to Beijing.
Shockingly, little known Alee Sharp, who was competing in just her second world cup, was the second-best Aussie in seventh place, beating out established world cup stars Emma Moffatt who finished ninth, Felicity Abram who finished 12th, and Erin Densham who finished 21st.
Gomez takes Mooloolaba title (March 31, 2008 )
Spain's Javier Gomez opened his 2008 world cup season with a satisfying victory in Mooloolaba today, finishing well ahead of last year's winner Brad Kahlefeldt. The 2006 world champion Tim Don made it back to the world cup podium, edging out Kiwi Bevan Docherty for the bronze.
After losing down the final stretch to Aussie last year, Gomez didn't leave it up to a sprint this time around. After running together for the first five kilometers, Gomez made his move and broke away from his Aussie rival. Kahlefeldt couldn't stay with the punishing Gomez pace and dropped back to second. But he was able to hang on for the silver. Don rounded out the podium with the bronze, his first world cup medal since a bronze in Salford in 2005.
With a fantastic final lap, Greg Bennett came in fifth place, one of four Aussies in the top ten.

Ironman 'New Zealand'
1st March 2008
Cameron Brown's winning time was amazingly quick given the wet and windy conditions they
were dealt up on the day.
Kieren Doe looked to give it his everything he had and lead from the front until halfway
through the Marathon.
Also notable were several other performances including multisport athlete Richard Ussher
who took out 7th overall in his first ever triathlon event.
Equally impressive was Joanna Lawn holding off a superb challenge from Australian Kate Bevilaqua.

Faris Al-Sultan took this event out in style with a full 30min gap back to second place.
Mind you Petr Vabrousek enters the most events of any ironman finishing 14 race in 2007 as a pro,
so top 3 placings are very good with such a heavy program.
Belinda Granger is in great form and looks to have chosen and prepared for this race well.
