The race is over a 3km swim, 200km bike and 20km run so this is a very different format from usual. The total prize purse for the race is $250,000usd which trails only the long running Kona ironman world champs. I am expecting the mens race to have some surprising results. Someone with early season form who is also a very good cyclist such as Richard Ussher could take the win. Rutger Beke has been keeping a relatively low profile recently but he could also surprise if he has done the preparation. The thing is that this is a new race on an untested course so making predictions is more tricky than usual.   Obviously Faris Al Sultan should be in the top few finishers as he is the driving force getting this race 'off the ground'. He has also created a group called 'team Abu Dhabi', so I expect these team members to be right up there also. An example is Rachel Joyce who may break into the top 3 woman. The womans results should be more predictable with Rebecca Keat, Julie Dibens and Yvonne Van Vlerken expected to be in the top 3. Interesting match ups include the super fast ITU graduate Rasmus Henning versus the recently on form Jordan Rapp who has focused pretty much on long distance triathlon from the outset. No one can truly guess the outcome because there are variables that can't be calculated such as each athletes individual build-up. Who has really been focusing on this race and training on course to best effect? Dirk Bockel and Phillip Graves will be at the front or very close to it at some stage but can they hang tough for the 20km run. It is going to be interesting and surely a few will 'blow-up' big time on the run. Well going to close to a maximum effort on the bike is the strategy I would recommend for in this race.
